Meet Barbara Bennett MMT, MT-BC

Barbara Bennett grew up in Spokane, WA but has spent most of her life overseas serving communities in South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Belize, and Mexico. Her education includes a Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance from Washington State University and a Master’s Degree in Music Therapy from Augsburg University in Minneapolis, MN. She is a member of the World Federation of Music Therapists (WFMT) and the Great Lakes Region of the American Music Therapy Association, a board-certified music therapist, and a Registered Music Therapist in Rwanda, East Africa. She is a dedicated professional with a deep passion for positive change and a profound appreciation for cultural exchange. Barbara has lived in Kigali, Rwanda with her husband Gary since 2006, but has recently retired in Windom, MN, eager to use her cross-cultural experience and gifts as a music therapist to serve individuals in the surrounding communities.

Barbara is dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults through community and client centered music therapy. Her integrity, compassion, and eagerness to learn, underscore her work. Her deep respect for different cultures and cultural practices, coupled with years of experience living overseas, aid her in building meaningful cross-cultural relationships. Her journey exemplifies the potential of positive change and the profound influence of culture on one’s personal and professional life. She has found that music therapy offers unique opportunities to process trauma, acculturation challenges, and disabilities. Whether in group or individual sessions, music therapy seeks to use music to address non-musical goals within a therapeutic relationship. When language fails, music often finds a way to express what words cannot.
