Barbara Bennett MMT, MT-BC is a board-certified music therapist. Music therapy is an evidence based, allied health profession that uses music to address non musical goals within a therapeutic relationship. It can benefit both neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals of all ages.
Therapeutic Process:

Referral: Understanding who is being referred and for what therapeutic purpose

Assessment: Ongoing process to determine clients needs, strengths, weaknesses, musical and non-musical behavior, as well as indications and contraindications of music therapy.

Goals & Objectives: Determine and examine overall treatment goals and a plan for meeting them.

Observation & implementation of music therapy strategies: Carry out the music therapy plan and determine its effectiveness for the client.

Evaluation: Analyze results and determine future actions.

Termination (closure): Bring treatment to a close after a predetermined period, if goals have been reached and no new goals have been set, or if client is no longer responding to treatment.

Improvisation (active): Allows for spontaneous musical creation and emotional expression.

Songwriting (creative) and Lyric Analysis: Enables self-expression and can be used to explore themes.

Listening (receptive): Can be used for relaxation, emotional regulation, and cognitive stimulation.

Instrument Playing & Performance (active): Promotes physical and cognitive engagement. Builds self esteem.

Rhythmic Activities (active): Can be used to improve coordination and motor skills.
